Description

Established as a fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation by the Hall Family Foundation in 1983, the Black Community Fund (BCF) has been investing in the African American community in Greater Kansas City for over 30 years. BCF grants provide support to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations focusing on enhancing the socio-economic aspects of the African American community in the Greater Kansas City area. The Black Community Fund became an affiliate of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 2007.

The Black Community Fund Board is assessing the Fund’s grantmaking impact and has paused new grantmaking at this time.  We suggest you revisit the Fund’s website for new deadlines in 2021.

Grant Range:
Grants usually range in size from $500 to $10,000. No organization may have more than one active grant or grant request with the Black Community Fund at any time. In general, the Black Community Fund will not be the sole or primary funder of a proposed project or organization.

Grant Requirements:
If your organization has never applied to for a BCF grant, please call 816.268.3296 before applying to help determine if your project is a good fit for this opportunity. To be considered a potential grantee, an organization must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and demonstrate a programmatic focus on improving the quality of life of African Americans in the Greater Kansas City region through one of the following areas:

  • Health Care
  • Education
  • Youth Development

The BCF Board of Directors will also consider a vital Community Enhancement, that will have positive long-term impact or is affecting systemic change – please call to discuss your Community Enhancement concept before submitting.

Areas of Exclusion:

  • Grants to endowments or to consultants who help prepare, create and build endowments
  • Reduction or liquidation of existing debt
  • Capital expenditures
  • Scholarships or grants to individuals
  • Annual appeals or fundraising drives, membership contributions and conference expenses
  • Requests to support special events are discouraged

Procedures for Grant Seekers:
Organizations may only submit a request for funding of a specific program once per year. If the request was not funded, the organization may submit a new application for a different program within the same year. Organizations with active grants may not reapply until final reports on the active grant have been submitted.
